Nintendo showed off gameplay footage of Pokémon Moon and Sun during its Treehouse presentation at E3 on Tuesday. It can be seen below.
The gameplay footage started with the young trainer at the beginning of the game, starting his journey to travel across the Alola region and introduced a couple of new Pokémon. Yungoos, which looks like a honey badger, was introduced during a random battle in the tall grass pretty early in the gameplay demo. An adorable-looking woodpecker-type Pokémon named Pikipek was also revealed in a random tall-grass battle.
The gameplay demo also gave a first glimpse of rival Hau in action as he and the player's trainer had their first of many battles in the game. New character Hala — who producer Junichi Masuda and director Shigeru Ohmori described as one of the most powerful and respected trainers on the island — was also in the gameplay video.
Masuda and Ohmori introduced a new aspect of the game called Battle Royal, which pits four trainers against each other at the same time. The first player to lose all of their Pokémon loses and at the end of the match, points are tallied to figure out which trainer has emerged the victor.
The second screen on the 3DS that players will use to give the Pokémon their orders has also been changed from what Nintendo has used in the past. The colors are different, as are the prompt buttons. There are also some noticeable design changes that appear on screen when a Pokémon is caught. Small changes to battle gameplay have also been included.
Masuda and Ohmori offered more details on the game and said the reason they're calledMoon and Sun is because they represent the source of life. They want to emphasis the relationship to life and nature in the Pokémon world. They said the new legendary Pokemon are representative of the moon and sun and will have special abilities based on those facets.
The gameplay footage showed off a little more of the new starter Pokémon Rowlet, Litten and Popplio. Masuda and Ohmori said they were designed to not only look cute while stationary, but also look cute while moving in the game. They added that the colors were representative of the classes — for example, Rowlet is partly green because he's party a grass Pokémon — and people should pay attention to that.
The game will be available to play on the 3DS as of Nov. 18, 2016. For the first time in the game franchise's history, it will be available to play in Chinese.
